Accessible education is very important but unfortunately- there isn’t that many curricula that can be considered as such. This is where Accessible Pathways comes in. Our goal is to provide inclusive homeschool materials that are of high-quality and contribute towards a children’s development and wellbeing.
When it comes to educating children with any type of homeschool curriculum, having a daily learning schedule that works for one’s family is crucial for success. In this blog post, homeschooling schedules and how curriculum from Accessible Pathways can fit in a homeschool day will be discussed.
What is Accessible Education?
Accessible education means creating learning opportunities that are inclusive and adaptable to meet the diverse needs of all students. This approach recognizes that some children may have diverse learning needs due to various diagnosed conditions and may require adjustments in teaching methods, materials, or environments to succeed. Whether it’s offering sensory-friendly activities, visual supports, or alternative ways to demonstrate understanding, accessible education ensures that learning is equitable and engaging for every student, regardless of their abilities or challenges.
Finding the Right Homeschool Schedule
One of the beautiful aspects of homeschooling is the flexibility it offers in crafting a schedule that suits your family’s needs. Some families thrive on a structured timetable with designated hours for each subject, while others embrace a more fluid, interest-driven approach.
Your homeschool schedule will depend on various factors, including your child’s learning needs, your family’s daily rhythm, and any external commitments. Whether you prefer morning lessons with afternoons free for exploration or shorter, focused sessions throughout the day, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
Homeschool lesson plans can typically be adapted to a variety of schedules. Many provide a clear outline of daily activities while allowing families to adjust the pace based on their unique needs. Structured families might follow a step-by-step path through the material to ensure all subjects are covered, while more flexible families can spread creative and hands-on activities across the week.
If you’re homeschooling a neurodiverse learner, schedules may also need to account for sensory breaks, transitions, and personalized adaptations. Incorporating sensory-friendly options and allowing room for individual needs can help create a supportive and engaging learning environment.
The key to a successful homeschool schedule is finding what works best for your family—and knowing that it’s okay to adjust as you go. A well-balanced routine can foster both learning and joy every day.
A Day in the Life with Our Curriculum
Ever wonder what a day of learning could look like with our curriculum? The following is a glimpse of how alternative education can unfold in a home, microschool, or classroom using our engaging, hands-on lessons—designed to be accessible for neurodiverse children:
Morning Routine–
The day begins with a morning circle. Children gather to review their schedule for the day, getting excited for the lessons ahead. A brief check-in on their emotional well-being encourages mindful learning throughout the day. Morning routines should be adaptable, offering sensory-friendly tools like fidget items, visual schedules etc. to help children feel comfortable and ready to learn.
Exploring Time Travel Adventures–
In the morning, students dive into a hands-on history lesson, traveling back in time! They learn about various things that align with the topic for the week and month. For neurodiverse learners, we’ve included things like optional visual supports and simplified language to ensure everyone can participate and understand the content at their own pace. Our curriculum’s story-driven approach keeps kids engaged and helps them connect emotionally with the material.
Core Subjects–
Next, students work on their core subjects like math, reading, and writing in their workbooks. It is one page per subject, per day. This will give them enough practice for important learning concepts. Gone are the days when a million problems need to be done. However, if you feel your child does need more practice- we provide resources for you.
Our structured yet flexible approach ensures that neurodiverse learners can access core subjects in a way that works best for them.
Snack Break + Physical Movement:
We encourage movement breaks, so after a brief snack, children engage in a fun, light P.E. activity . Whether it’s going for a walk around the block or practicing simple stretches, these activities not only keep children energized but also provide movement opportunities that are calming for kids who need sensory breaks.
Creative Time:
In the afternoon, it’s time to get creative! Whether it’s making clay tablets to mimic cuneiform or making their own tool, creativity flows naturally. Our activities offer sensory-friendly options like tactile materials, and our step-by-step guidance makes the projects accessible for every child, regardless of their learning challenges.
Reflection and Review:
At the end of the day, children reflect on what they learned through a discussion with parents/caregivers. They can also write what they learned in their notebook that comes with curriculum. The reflection process is designed to be calming and supportive, making sure every child feels heard and valued.
And that’s a wrap!
A day with Time Travel Adventures (and subsequent curriculum units) is never the same twice, and that’s the beauty of it! With adaptable lessons, creative activities, and real-world connections, your child will develop a deep understanding and excitement for learning that lasts. We make sure every child has the tools and support they need to succeed.
